St. John's Home Alzheimer's / Dementia Care

Our Alzheimer's/dementia care approach is to recognize each person's uniqueness and potential for growth. We support the Eden Alternative goal to provide individualized, person-directed care. St. John's elder neighborhoods include elders living with dementia and those who are not. These neighborhoods at 150 Highland Avenue and at our Green House homes have shown that people with Alzheimer's disease or dementia can live well without being separated from others. St. John's prides itself in being a leader in the newest, most innovative ideas in elder care. We are the only Eden registered skilled nursing facility in New York State and have opened the first community-integrated Green House homes in the nation. Our vision statement pledges to "lead and inspire a shift in society's views of elderhood," and we will continue to work to set the best standards of care for our current and future elders living with Alzheimer's/dementia.

As an Eden Alternative Home, we have come to learn that segregating people based on a condition like dementia puts the disease ahead of the person, which can undermine that goal. We believe that the best path to well-being for people living with dementia is through engagement with a diverse community, and the successes of our Green House homes and other integrated neighborhoods of St. John's have shown the benefits of this approach.

St. John's Home has safeguarded entrances and exits, neighborhoods filled with art, music, visiting pets, plants and activities. We offer enclosed outdoor courtyards, providing a safe haven for exercise and outdoor activities like gardening.

Most importantly, St. John's Home offers a warm and comfortable environment, staffed with caring professionals who work together to provide individualized care for each elder facing the challenges of Alzheimer's/dementia.
